This figure is part of a series exhibiting a cavity where the heart should be. It represents a figure in enough emotional pain to rip out her heart and exist without it. It was carved after having researched and learned about the history of the figure in art. It exhibits some of the earliest qualities of stone manipulation in that it conforms to the shape of the rock and has no open holes or appendages. Early carvers had difficulty with these aspects because they had to learn to deal with the fragility of such features. I wanted to reference that style of working in this piece.
